Understanding the UW Policy
What is the UW web accessibility policy?
Briefly: The UW Policy is an effort to make the web more accessible for people with vision, hearing, or other disabilities.
In detail: Guidelines to help you implement the UW policy are available from Learning Support Services.

- Request an exception for your site
Why should I care about web accessibility?
It's the right thing to do: The web is all about providing access to as many people as possible. It is only right, then, that the University community adapt or remove barriers that keep some from gaining easy access.
It's the law: The Federal government has certain requirements for the fair treatment of persons with disabilities. The updated UW Policy endorses compliance with the Federal Rehabilitation Act's Section 508 standards - subsections 1194.22 and 1194.31. For further explanation, view a ten minute narrated presentation regarding the legal requirements for accessibility (transcript).
Your funding may require it: UW sites that are funded with Federal grants must abide by the rules of those grants. This includes web site accessibility.
