Enterprise Storage Service (ESS)
DoIT's Enterprise Storage Service utilizes EMC Clariion CX700's. The CX700's are connected to servers housed on the DoIT platform through a Storage Area Network (SAN). They provide fiber channel disk storage to a variety of servers and operating systems including Windows, AIX, Solaris, and Linux.
Each CX700 contains 8GB of cache; can perform 200,000 IOPS; connect to 256 hosts; and can be expanded to hold up to 58TB of disk. At DoIT each CX700 is mirrored to a remote site to provide disaster recovery. All hosts are dual connected through redundant SANs, and each CX700 has redundant processors, making this a fast, reliable and economical disk solution for a wide variety of applications.
ESS service is currently available only to servers located on the
DoIT Platform in the Computer Sciences Building on the Madison campus.

Storage Levels
- Tier 1: High Availability Fiber Channel storage on EMC DMX-3. The DMX-3 system can provide 128 Gb/s data transfer, with a total storage of 15 TB, expandable to 960 TB, and 24 GB cache. The DMX-3 is mirrored on an identical system at the WARF data center. Recommended for mission critical applications.
- Tier 2: Fiber Channel Disk on four EMC Clariion CX700. The CX-700 provide up to 1.3 Gb/s transfer rate, with a total storage of 35 TB, expandable to 288 TB total, and 8 GB cache. The CX700's are mirrored on identical devices located at the WARF data center. Recommended for heavy to moderate I/O applications.
- Tier 3: ATA Disk also provided by EMC Clariion CX700's. Currently providing over 44TB of storage. ATA storage is significantly slower, and less exensive than fiber channel storage. Recommended for low I/O operations.
