Computing Essentials for Faculty and Staff
Research Resources
Running a high-functioning research environment requires a core set of building blocks. DoIT can help faculty and researchers set up their research program with the help of the resources listed below.
High-Speed Network
UW-Madison has invested considerable resources in the 21st Century Network, which provides 10 Gbps backbone connections and can transmit massive amounts of data with other research institutions through Internet2 and BOREAS Net.
Server and Data Storage Hosting
DoIT can provide a secure, climate-controlled environment for running your applications and storing critical data and information. Our hosting services include database and web hosting, servers, output management and printing.
Collaboration Tools
My WebSpace is an effective way to store, share and/or collaborate on files with others. Rather than putting data on hard media or sending large email attachments, My WebSpace lets users store files, data or graphics online where they can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection.
Collaboration With Campus Colleagues
DoIT is a key partner in a campus-wide initiative to help align local, national and international information technology resources with the needs of campus researchers. Through workshops, seminars, email lists and other activities, the Research@Madison group provides many opportunities to share your ideas and learn from colleagues.
Specialized Software and Licensing Programs
The DoIT Tech Store and the Wisconsin Integrated Software Catalog offer dozens of common software applications at discounted prices. DoIT also provides specialized licensing services and can help individual researchers take advantage of group licensing options available to the UW Campus and System. In addition, there are several research-oriented software and computing services available.
Accelrys GCG for Sequence Analysis is a collection of over 140 software programs for performing sequence comparisons, database search and retrieval, editing and publication, fragment assembly, gene finding and pattern recognition, sequence importing and exporting, mapping, protein analysis and other utilities.
Transana is free software developed at UW-Madison for the transcription and qualitative analysis of digital video or audio data. Transana lets you analyze and manage your data in very sophisticated ways.
Grant Administration Tool
UW-Madison uses Grants.gov to assist faculty in applying for and administer federal government grants. Partnering with Research and Sponsored Programs in the Graduate School, DoIT is helping to provide access to services like Grants.gov and to provide other research administration services for faculty.
ResearchChannel
The ResearchChannel is a 24-hour network for the broadcast of faculty research findings, lectures and documentaries, reaching nearly 18 million television households in the U.S. and countless online viewers worldwide. UW-Madison faculty and staff can submit content and gain a new avenue for communicating with the public.
WebSurvey@UW
WebSurvey@UW creates and deploys online surveys. Its user-friendly interface allows users to customize templates, pose questions in dozens of formats, track responses, send follow-ups and generate reports. Departments can use it to evaluate programs or identify student trends.
MINDS@UW
MINDS@UW is a digital content repository developed jointly by UW-Madison Libraries and DoIT. It is a searchable, digital collection of materials submitted by faculty and staff from UW campuses across the state.
