Wireless

Wireless Log-in Is Different

To connect to the network with campus wireless, simply use your wireless client application to associate with the nearest Access Point. The SSID broadcast by the AP will be in the format "UWNet-buildingname." For example, "UWNet-UnionSouth" would be for Union South. Next, open your browser and go to any location. The portal will capture your session, authenticate you with your NetID, and then connect you back to your original destination. If you have questions about the new campus wireless service in your building, please contact the Help Desk at 264-HELP or visit http://helpdesk.wisc.edu.

Connecting to the campus network and the Internet should always be this easy. Just open your laptop and browser, click on a link, and log on. No cable, no jack, no kidding.

The UW-Madison campus wireless network service provides laptop users with fast and convenient access to email and Web-based services, including My UW-Madison. Students, faculty, staff and campus guests are never more than a five-minute walk from one of many access sites.

What good is wireless?

More than 12,000 students and almost 6,000 faculty and staff use laptop computers at UW-Madison. If you are one of them, the campus wireless network can help you stay connected. All you need is a NetID and a laptop with a wireless network card.

Between classes, students can check their email, review study materials posted on class Web sites, and prepare assignments. A wireless connection provides full access to all the resources of My UW-Madison, including student records, calendar functions, and other features. Students can take their network connection with them - to the library, Union Terrace, a snack bar - and take advantage of their study time and their free time.

Faculty and academic advisors can more easily communicate with students and each other, even when they are away from their offices or without access to a conventionally networked computer. Whatever you can do on the network with a hardwired computer you can do with a wireless connection.

Locations of Wireless network

The campus wireless network is fast, about 20 times faster than a 56-kbps modem connection and is available in over 70% of all campus buildings. You have the portability of a cell telephone, with access to the Web, email, and other services.

You can use a wireless connection these locations (map):
