Accessibility

"Accessibility" is what users experience when Web pages are designed using universal design principles. All users benefit from accessible Web resources, especiallly those with disabilities. A disability is broadly defined to mean any chronic or temporary limitation of sensory, physical or cognitive functioning. Oftentimes a user's limitations may stem from injury- or aging-related conditions as well.

Accessibility is so important that the University of Wisconsin-Madison developed a Policy Governing World Wide Web Accessibility that outlines requirements Web designers must follow. The policy endorses compliance with the Federal Rehabilitation Act’s Section 508 standards, subsections 1194.22 and 1194.31.

DoIT staff can critique a current website for accessibility or, assist in developing templates and other tools to ensure that the web site you create is accessible from the start.

See DoIT’s Web Accessibility Resources for additional information & resources including training, evaluation, consulting services and more.
